How to Clean Cloth Nappies

Overview

Cloth nappies are very sustainable nappies. They are environmentally friendly and affordable, unlike disposable nappies. Cloth nappies are also very practical to use. Cloth nappies are better for the environment compared to its plastic counterparts. Modern cloth nappies which are made out of hemp and bamboo are even friendlier to the environment and are easy to wash. However, people think that washing cloth nappies will require plenty of water, detergent, and bleach. And this makes it not friendly to the environment anymore. There are certain steps on how to wash your cloth nappies properly. This method is friendlier to the environment, cost effective and it is not disgusting at all.

Washing

Flush the solid waste from the cloth nappy away. There are other parents who use disposable liners in the cloth nappies. This will make the flushing away of solid waste easier. After that, put the cloth nappies in a pail which is half full, and then add a quarter of vinegar or borax. This will make the removal of stain easier. This will also control the odor of the cloth nappies. You can also try putting them on a dry pail if you wash them frequently. Then, you can soak the nappies until such time that you will be ready to wash them. Make sure you drain the excess liquid in your toilet. You can also use the spin cycle to remove all the soaking solution. Next, you must wash your cloth nappies in hot water. Double rinse the cloth nappies in cold water, and then add vinegar to the second rinse. This will help make the nappies fresh. Look for stains that are not taken off yet before you put the cloth nappies in the dryer. You can easily remove them if you notice them before they set. You can dry the cloth nappies in your dryer or you can put them under the sunlight.

Storing

There are two main methods in storing dirty nappies before you wash them. You can use a wet pail or you can use a dry pail. The wet pail method is when you put the dirty cloth nappies in a pail full of water and baking soda. However, this may cause stagnant water, this may get a little messy and this may even lead to drowning. In the dry pail method, you can just put the cloth nappies on a dry pail, sprinkle baking soda on it and cover it. If the pail is already full of dirty cloth nappies, let’s say if the cloth nappies in the pail reach 25, then you can already put them in the washing machine for cleaning. You can use the diaper pail liner to remove the nappies.
